when grace rachel and i were in ny together we talked about giving seminars to each other of things that we had learned and so i'm starting on the blog!

i took this great class on mass media and american politics and we had to make a video clip that was an example of how health care (that was my group's topic) should be covered. its not exactly how it should be covered because we had serious time constraints but nonetheless its better than usual.

if you want further information just ask. i have lots of thoughts on it.

project time

hi guys! so as everyone knows, i am working for my graphic design professor this summer. to sort of teach me/train me before i start work, he is giving me several assignments that i will work on at home. they are like little design challenges. i just got my first one. i thought everyone would like to see the assignment. it's going to be really interesting and i think it's good to start looking at objects like planners more critically. maybe i will make one for everybody!

As discussed, here is the first of three projects. This should take about two weeks. Please contact me at any point that you wish to discuss your ideas or questions on the project. Also, if you have time before you go, it would be great if you could visit the studio.

Design a calendar/datebook/schedule for daily/weekly/monthly/yearly use.

Design it so that it may easily printed/folded/bound on a standard laser printer

Focus on typography as a structuring device.

Lines (or elements used in serial linear arrangement, after all a line is point extended in space) should also be used for spatial and hierarchical fuction

What is the relationship between the page and the units of time?

What events should the book record?

Is the binding also an expression of time? if so, which unit?

Can different papers be used to demonstrate difference?

What is the relationship between handwriting and typography? Does one complete the other?

How does the design accommodate cultural events? Labor day? Arbor Day? etc. In other words, what is the content?

Think of designing this not only your personal use, but for general use. All projects have a public dimension.
